Smartphone navigation apps are free and preinstalled on most handsets these days, so does that mean physical sat navs are now redundant? Not so fast. All of the apps we’ve listed work with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Sygic is another popular option due to its high-quality 3D maps and its ability to let you download maps to use offline, ideal if you have poor internet or don’t want to eat your data, although you have to pay for an annual subscription to access all of its features. If you’re driving in congested areas, we recommend checking out Waze, an app that’s often the preferred choice of taxi and Uber drivers because it’s particularly good at helping you to find routes around traffic while showing camera warnings. Both give you live traffic updates and show information about travel times and closures. Functionally it’s very similar to Google’s software, but has a slightly more simplified and uncluttered design that’s easier on the eyes. However, anyone with an iPhone should use Apple Maps instead.
